Whatley Manor in Wiltshire received the Sustainable Business Award at the 2021 Catey Awards, which took place on Tuesday 7 September. The annual awards ceremony, which had been a virtual event during last year’s lockdown, took place at the J W Marriott Grosvenor House London on Park Lane.

Sue Williams, General Manager of Whatley Manor, accepted the award, which was sponsored by procurement consultants 4C Associates, recognising the operator that has adopted the most innovative practices to make sustainability an integral part of their business.

Along with several other criteria, the judging panel looked for businesses that had implemented and achieved an action plan for mitigating their impact on the environment; evidence of educating and involving employees in achieving those goals; as well as evidence of involving guests in their sustainability practices.

After collecting the award, Williams said: “I am so delighted to have accepted this award on behalf of the entire team at Whatley Manor. Sustainability is such an important subject globally, which makes this recognition even more special.”

An inspirational article that we think deserves a read – Robin Hutson, founder and chief executive of the boutique hotel chain Home Grown Hotels, proves that you can succeed and your dreams will come true with perseverance, determination and hard work.

“I managed to screw up all my O-levels, and wasn’t invited to sixth-form college, so I had to find something else to do. At the age of 16 I wasn’t interested in doing much apart from chasing girls, and my mother said ‘well, you always liked messing around in the kitchen.”

She advised her son to enrol on a course in hotel and catering operations, which whetted his appetite for a career in the hospitality industry.

He went on to establish the popular Hotel du Vin chain in 1994, which made him a multi-millionaire 10 years later when he and his business partner sold the company for £66m.

Cliveden, the iconic 17th century stately home, and now one of the world’s finest luxury hotels, has scooped the top hotel award in England becoming ‘AA Hotel of the Year 2015-16’; the announcement was made on Monday 5th October at a glittering awards ceremony held at Grosvenor House in London.

The AA Hospitality Awards are the highlight in the industry’s calendar, a night to remember as world-renowned chefs, prominent hoteliers’, restaurateurs, hospitality gurus and key media gather to celebrate the ultimate accolades for hotels in the UK that are recognised as being outstanding examples in their particular market.

Commenting on the award, Andrew Stembridge, Managing Director of Cliveden and its sister property, Chewton Glen said:

“This fabulous achievement is testament to the vision and generosity of our owners, together with the energy and enthusiasm of General Manager, Sue Williams and the whole team. Cliveden has been reborn again. Historically Cliveden was probably the most renowned hotel outside London and to be crowned AA Hotel of the Year is symbolic of the fact that Cliveden is well and truly back on the map”.

Today Cliveden provides a decadent ‘home from home’ for guests from all around the globe who appreciate the fact that they are always made to feel more ‘house guest’ than ‘hotel client’.

The recent multi-million pound refurbishment has added to the rich layers of history that make Cliveden completely unique in the hotel world.

General Manager, Sue Williams was thrilled with this fabulous news, she commented:

“I would like to thank the AA for all their support and steerage since we took over Cliveden House three years ago.  It has been quite a journey and a real highlight of my career to have the opportunity to help bring Cliveden back to its former glory. Above all, we hope our guests are enjoying this new era for the house and will enjoy the exciting times we have ahead.”

This fabulous achievement follows closely the endorsement made by readers of Condé Nast Traveller, who awarded Cliveden 6th position in their poll of the UK’s Top 10 Holiday Hotels; as a new entry into this category, that was also a stellar achievement for the hotel.

The eponymous André Garrett Restaurant has also garnered a small trophy cabinet of awards recently, being named as one of the top 20 UK Restaurants in ‘The Waitrose Good Food Guide 2016’ and, being placed in the top 10 UK Restaurants in the highly regarded ‘Square Meal Guide’.
